Each year, Mary Meekers’s Internet Trends presentation is the best way to get up to speed on global Internet development. Meeker presented 2017 Internet Trends at Recode Conference on May 31. She covered a lot of ground with 353 slides, we highlight three key points vital to Asia-Pacific tech business.
- Online gaming is exploding especially in Asia-Pacific which accounts for US$47 billion of the 2016 global revenue of US$100 billion. This augurs well for gaming platform Sea, previously known as Garena, as it prepares for a US listing. Note that gamification will lead the way for future human-computer interaction.
- 10 of the most congested cities in the world are in Asia, namely, Kolkata, Dhaka, Mumbai, Manila and Jakarta. Entrepreneurs/startups: think how to lure consumers to go online instead of visiting stores and other business offices and chance being stuck in massive traffic jams.
- India is going mobile in big way. Low Internet penetration (only 27%) and falling wireless data prices have encouraged greater smartphone ownership. Indians are using smartphones to access the Internet for the first time which means opportunities in mobile payments and e-commerce.
